Iremember the first time I saw an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show as a kid. Van Dyke’s goofy prat falls and Mary Tyler Moore’s graceful beauty instantly struck me as one of the most adorable couples in show business. I desperately wished they were married in real life, like Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, but settling for their on-screen versions wasn’t so bad. And to this day, I can still remember Rob and Laura Petrie’s favorite dinner meals: spaghetti with meatballs for him, moo goo gai pan for her!
The iconic show leaves a lasting mark on anyone who catches even one episode. They really knew how to make every plot special with their charming characters. They also took plenty of opportunities to each show off their singing and dancing chops, which came in handy for this Christmas episode from 1963. Joined by castmates Rose Marie and Maury Amsterdam, the season 3 episode features several delightful seasonal performances by the talented actors.
This clip shows Van Dyke and Moore stepping into Santa’s famous red suit to serenade each other as festive sweethearts down on their luck and looking for a holiday date. They’re both disguised under their bushy white beards when Van Dyke notices Moore isn’t doing so well at collecting donations without offering the shoppers a hearty, “Ho, ho, ho!” When she responds in her girlish voice, the duo do what they do best and entertain the crowd with their song and fancy footwork.
