This rickety house in the middle of the desert didn’t originally look like much. That is, until Phillip K. Smith III got his hands on it. The 70-year-old homesteader shack stood in the middle of his Joshua Tree, California property and he was determined to transform it into something even more breathtaking than its original form.

Preserving all the authentic wooden slats, nails, and hardware, Phillip added mirrors to the shack, ultimately converting it into a truly beautiful structure which he aptly named “Lucid Stead.” During the day, this house of mirrors reflects the stunning surrounding desert and at night it turns into a colorful light installation. In the video featurette, Phillip cites his inspiration as the desert itself and describes his art as “responding to the quiet of the place.”

we can’t deny Lucid Stead’s magnetism, felt all the way through our computer screens. This structure is undeniably mesmerizing to gaze at and we think it’s a perfect way to meditate on the breathtaking landscape surrounding the building. However, what grabs us the most is how it constantly changes as Joshua Tree’s lights and shadows shift across the sand each day.
