For 50 years, a real-life superhero named Thomas Weller has patrolled San Diego’s highways in his very own rescue vehicle. The famous “San Diego Highwayman” voluntarily assists anyone on the roads — from stranded drivers and accident victims, to drivers who ran out of gas. Thomas has helped thousands and thousands of motorists in need, never charging money for his services. Instead, he presents a card to those he helps that says, “Assisting you has been my pleasure. I ask for no payment other than for you to pass on the favor by helping someone in distress that you encounter.”

In 2011, someone crashed into “Beulah,” the beloved rescue car Thomas has been driving since 1966. Heartbroken, he wanted nothing more than to repair Beulah, but he didn’t have the funds. For five years, Beulah was sitting in his garage. That’s where a kindhearted stranger named Rick enters the picture.

Rick heard about Thomas’ situation. He was so touched by the Highwayman’s dedication and selflessness that he decided return the favor and fix Beulah. There were many mechanical repairs that had to be made, but for Rick, it was a “no-brainer.”

As Thomas watches Beulah approach his driveway, he stands there speechless, grateful, and ready to get back on the road to help others in need. As he says, “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life, that we cannot sincerely help another without helping ourselves.”
