Whenever you see a car parked in heat with a child or pet locked inside, contact the authorities immediately. But in cases of extremity, Nat Geo has a hack to help open a window without the use of brute force.

According a figure provided on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website, “Even outside temperatures in the 60s can cause a car temperature to rise well above 110° F. When the outside temperature is 83° F, even with the window rolled down 2 inches, the temperature inside the car can reach 109° F in only 15 minutes.” High temperatures can cause irreparable damage to the brain and vital organs, and it can be fatal if the body’s internal temperature rises above 107°. Leaving a child or animal in a hot car is inexcusable, and taking action could save a life.

Arming his accomplice with a hammer, our hacker demonstrates that attempting to break a car window with a blunt object is rarely effective. Instead, he carries with him a spark plug that he breaks open to pull out a piece of porcelain. A tiny little piece of porcelain thrown at a car window is more effective than a blunt object because of the makeup of the window. It’s mostly resistant to a hammer, but not the fine tip of a piece of shattered porcelain.
